The Inspiration for This East Village Building's Facade? Diversity and Trump.
xCruzo Brief
A six-story East Village building at the corner of Avenue B and East Fourth Street has refreshed its facade with an explicit message about diversity and New York. Owned by 79-year-old Antonio Echeverri (Tony), the Old Law Italianate-style tenement was built in 1891 and has stood out for years in bright colors—previously red, blue and gold to reflect Colombia’s flag. This year’s repaint, costing more than $100,000, uses Benjamin Moore Spring Lilac on most exterior bricks and Charmed Violet for decorative bands. Gold accents, including glittery friezes and owl-and-lion panels, add a jewel-like effect. Echeverri said Trump’s skyscraper obsession inspired the idea of eliciting emotion.
