The Mediterranean's warming waters are drawing hundreds of invasive species

Scientists warn that the Mediterranean Sea is warming rapidly and is now attracting hundreds of invasive fish species that can outcompete native populations. In a report cited by experts, climate change—driven mainly by burning oil, coal and gas—is expected to raise Mediterranean temperatures by 2 to 6 degrees Celsius by 2100. Heat waves are also projected to become more frequent and severe. Because the Mediterranean is an enclosed basin, heat dissipates less than in open oceans. Invasive species such as the spotted puffer fish, described as among the worst invaders, are moving toward France and Spain after entering via the Suez Canal, with spread accelerating after the early 2000s.
