The Tucson School for the Blind marks its inaugural week of classes with a fundraiser
The Tucson School for the Blind marked its inaugural week of classes by hosting a community fundraiser to help cover start-up expenses as the new school officially opened. The Aug. 4 event at Jojo’s Restaurant in Old Town Tucson was organized by Marcy Albert, a retired employee from Arizona State Schools for the Deaf and Blind. Albert learned about the new school and arranged for it to be the featured beneficiary of Jojo’s weekly “Tuesdays for Tucson,” with 10% of proceeds donated. The money raised included a $450 check presented to founder Kate Scally Howell and an additional $200 in donations. The school was created after the ASDB Tucson campus closed earlier in the year, alongside the relocation to Oro Valley and layoffs of about 60 employees.
