Sonora Pass in California’s Sierra Nevada—also known as Highway 108—is widely cited as one of the steepest stretches of highway in the United States. The pass lies about 90 minutes from Sacramento and runs roughly 80 miles, climbing to a summit elevation of 9,624 feet, making it the second-highest paved pass in the state. While there’s no official national record kept for “steepest” roads, accounts point to the steepest segments as approaching a maximum grade of 26%. The grade is said to occur as drivers near the summit.
