Trans" Man Leaves U.S., Fearing Trump; Begs to Return After Being Put in Muslim-heavy Asylum Center
A 48-year-old software engineer, described as a “trans” man named Jane-Michelle Arc, left the United States, saying he feared President Donald Trump and growing hostility in the San Francisco Bay Area. He traveled to the Netherlands and sought asylum, portraying the country as tolerant and supportive. Dutch authorities granted his request and placed him in an asylum center together with refugees from Morocco, Eritrea, Somalia, Algeria, Syria and others. The account adds that Arc later asked to return to the U.S., saying danger there made his “mental health” deteriorate substantially. Critics argue his mental health had also been strained in San Francisco, including after incidents involving women’s bathrooms and reported fear of being hit by a truck.
