Trump Declares Energy Ceasefire Between Ukraine and Russia
On Oct. 11, President Donald Trump announced an immediate “energy ceasefire” between Russia and Ukraine, saying both governments agreed to halt attacks targeting energy infrastructure. In a Truth Social post, Trump ordered that the pause take effect immediately and not be broken. The announcement came after days of rising diplomatic friction in Washington, Kyiv and Moscow over infrastructure strikes and fuel trade, amid negotiations over terms for talks. Earlier Sunday, Volodymyr Zelensky said Ukraine would be prepared to suspend long-range drone strikes on Russian oil refineries if Moscow agreed to a reciprocal, verifiable halt against Ukraine’s electricity and heating networks. Zelensky told ABC News that stopping Putin is the main goal and urged American and European support. He also cited Russian bombardments affecting civilian life-support systems, including 196 strikes on Ukraine’s electrical sector and 20 on oil and gas infrastructure over the prior week, with 153 civilian deaths. Neither side immediately confirmed verification details for the ceasefire. Trump’s energy ceasefire followed his Oct. 9 commercial diesel arrangement with Russia and a temporary U.S. Treasury general license authorizing Russian diesel transactions through April 2027, which drew Ukrainian criticism.
