Trump Finally Backs Infantino Amid FIFA Leadership Crisis
President Donald Trump weighed in on FIFA’s leadership dispute, adding his support for Gianni Infantino amid mounting calls to replace the federation’s president. The controversy followed Infantino’s late-July FIFA Forward Enterprise proposal to sell stakes in the World Cup, which was dropped later that day. On Monday, the presidents of Europe, North America and Asia’s confederations—also FIFA vice presidents—published a joint letter accusing Infantino of “deception” and FIFA of “fearmongering” in communications to member associations. Trump said he “never spoke to him” before posting on Truth Social that replacing Infantino would be a “terrible mistake.” Infantino is backed by multiple associations, while some countries have withdrawn endorsements ahead of March’s election.
