President Donald Trump is set to impose new double-digit tariffs on dozens of U.S. trading partners as temporary levies expire on Friday. The U.S. will charge 10% to 12.5% on imports from 60 partners representing 99% of U.S. imports, citing inadequate enforcement of a near-century-old ban on goods made with forced labor. U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said partners must enforce the prohibition as rigorously as the U.S. does. The new tariffs are scheduled to start at 12:01 a.m. Friday, when temporary 10% worldwide tariffs end, following a February Supreme Court ruling that struck down Trump’s largest tariffs and required refunds. Trump is also using Section 301 under the Trade Act of 1974, and the USTR has launched a probe into whether 16 countries—covering 70% of U.S. imports—overproduced goods to pressure prices and disadvantage U.S. firms. Exemptions include oil, gas, and fertilizer, and duty-free goods under USMCA.
