Uefa close to selecting candidate to run against Infantino in Fifa election
UEFA is close to identifying a candidate to challenge Gianni Infantino in the FIFA election, with the possible approval of the challenger’s identity as early as next week, according to the report. The push to oppose Infantino is tied to March’s timetable, where candidates must confirm by 18 November. Discussions with potential nominees have gained momentum, despite setbacks including a surprise endorsement of Infantino’s fourth term by Sheikh Salman bin Ibrahim al-Khalifa, president of the Asian Football Confederation. If confirmed, the candidate’s name would go to UEFA’s executive committee and an online meeting of confederation FA heads. Arsène Wenger has been floated but is not believed to be seriously in contention, and any challengers must assemble 106 votes.
