Ukraine winning war with Russia, retired U.S. generals say, as top Ukrainian commander says over 230 square miles retaken
Several retired U.S. generals and the former director of a U.S. intelligence agency told CBS News they believe Ukraine now holds the upper hand in its war with Russia. Oleksandr Syrski, Ukraine’s top commander, said Kyiv has retaken about 600 square kilometers, roughly 232 square miles, this year. He did not specify locations but said fighting remains heaviest in the southeast, including Oleksandrivka and Huliaipole. Retired Lt. Gen. Robert Ashley described the developments as Ukraine defeating enemy operational objectives and preserving freedom of action. Analysts cited Ukraine’s advancing drone capabilities as a key driver. Experts say mid-range FPV drones now account for the majority of Russian casualties, according to Zelensky. Since 2024 Ukraine has deployed long-range drones and cruise missiles that struck bases in St. Petersburg, more than 600 miles away. Rob Lee noted that Ukraine’s front-line units have extended drone reach to 50-100 kilometers beyond the front. Analysts say these capabilities are expanding and could degrade Russia’s supply lines. Still, Ashley cautioned that gains are reversible and not a guaranteed breakthrough depending on Moscow’s escalation.
