United States show resilience after Folarin Balogun's red card in World Cup
The United States showed resilience in World Cup play after Folarin Balogun’s red card forced them to manage a major setback in the round of 32 at Santa Clara, California. After cruising through Paraguay and Australia 6-1, the US faced early group-stage trouble when they went down 2-1 to Turkey with a weakened lineup, then ultimately lost in stoppage time. Against Turkey, the US also scored first and still won 2-0, but Balogun was dismissed in the 64th minute after an attempted challenge led his foot to land on Bosnian defender Tarik Muharemovic’s right ankle. Malik Tillman scored in the 82nd minute, sealing it despite 10 men. Balogun will miss the Monday round of 16 against Belgium in Seattle, where Belgium advanced after a 3-2 extra-time win over Senegal.
