Verge of camp, Red Wings name Shawn Horcoff interim GM

The Detroit Red Wings named former NHL player Shawn Horcoff as interim general manager, taking over from Steve Yzerman. Horcoff, who joined Detroit’s front office in 2016 after retiring, most recently served as assistant general manager before his earlier roles including director of player development, assistant director of player personnel, and GM of the Grand Rapids Griffins in the AHL. The team begins training camp Thursday, coinciding with Horcoff’s 48th birthday, and opens the season at home Oct. 2 against the New York Rangers. Horcoff will handle day-to-day roster decisions, the salary cap, and hockey operations personnel while reporting to CEO Chris Ilitch.
