Voters in Illinois to decide on push for new state
xCruzo Brief
On Nov. 3, Illinois voters in 12 counties and several townships will cast non-binding referendums on whether the state should be split, potentially creating a new state outside Cook County. The advisory votes are meant to gauge public support and signal whether officials should pursue legislation and constitutional steps toward a binding separation, building momentum toward a proposal backed by 33 counties already. Organizers say Chicago’s influence leaves rural residents unheard. Illinois Governor JB Pritzker has warned against placing such “kick out” ideas on ballots. Shelby County will hold its referendum next week.
