We're not moving fast enough': World falling short of promised 30% land and water goals ahead of UN biodiversity summit | Fortune
xCruzo Brief
Ahead of COP17, a biodiversity summit starting in Yerevan, Armenia on Monday and running until Oct. 30, a UN progress report highlights major funding and target shortfalls. The Montreal deal from 2022 set a 30×30 goal—protecting 30% of land and water by 2030—along with $200 billion a year for biodiversity by 2030 and subsidy reforms that could add another $500 billion for nature. However, current pledges would protect only 26% of land and 12% of sea by 2030, the report says. Wealthier countries are raising $75–$92 billion annually from 2023 to 2025, less than half the 2030 target. Funding for poorer nations also lags: $19 billion raised in 2024 versus a $20 billion goal for 2025.
