West Bengal Education Overhaul: CM Announces New Scholarship, Curriculum Changes and More

West Bengal Chief Minister Suvendu Adhikari announced a broad education overhaul during a Teachers’ Day programme, outlining new schools, curriculum revisions, and measures aimed at improving sports and infrastructure. Plans include creating two “CM Shri” schools in every district, modeled on PM Shri schools, with smart boards and digital learning infrastructure, admissions from Class 6 via entrance exams, and centres of excellence for sports in the northern and western parts of Bengal. The roadmap also proposes limiting mobile phone use in schools, adding contributions of Syama Prasad Mookerjee and Swami Pranabananda to the syllabus, and expanding music education. Adhikari said about 19,000 schools lack adequate infrastructure and unveiled a ₹300 crore composite grant.
