With about one-third of the regular season remaining and less than a week before the next Monday trade deadline, the Texas Rangers strengthened their position in the American League West by keeping a winning record. Entering Tuesday’s games, Texas led by two games over in-state rival Houston and held a 2 1/2-game edge on reigning division champion Seattle after sweeping three of four from the Mariners. The Rangers’ Monday 7-3 win featured Joc Pederson, who homered twice. Seattle, aiming for its first AL West title since 2001, has dropped 11 of 16. Houston beat the last-place Los Angeles Angels 6-4 Monday.
