What was Payne Haas doing in Kangaroos camp?
South Sydney recruit Payne Haas paid a surprise visit to the Kangaroos camp on Monday, but it wasn’t related to any World Cup crisis request from his friend and Australian coach Kevin Walters. The NRL’s leading prop was there simply to catch up for lunch with teammates and close mates, including Pat Carrigan, David Fifita and Tino Fa’asuamaleaui, before beginning Rabbitohs pre-season training. Haas, 26, arrived in a black Mizuno cap and white R4W activewear top, with his left ring finger and pinkie heavily strapped after hand surgery. Tino Fa’asuamaleaui said Haas starts pre-season training on Friday. Reports of a late World Cup cameo for Samoa were ruled out by coach Ben Gardiner, though Fa’asuamaleaui said Haas remained tempted by Samoa. Cameron Murray joked Haas may be eyeing real estate in Double Bay, where the Kangaroos are staying.
