What we know about the 16-year-old who opened fire at his former elementary school, killing 4 in a special needs classroom

Bend police say authorities are still working to understand what led Griffin J. John II, 16, to force entry into his former elementary school and fire into a special needs classroom on Thursday. Police said John climbed over the Silver Rail Elementary fence shortly after 1 p.m., then shot at a witness in a pickup truck who confronted him. He entered by firing into the glass panes of an external double door and fired multiple rounds into the mixed-age classroom. A teacher tried to disarm him, and a 36-year-old parent later fatally shot John. Three children (5, 8, 11) and a 25-year-old teacher died; a 7-year-old and a 54-year-old teacher were critically injured. Investigators are probing possible motives, including potential mental health concerns, and searching the home for electronic devices.
