A new Fairleigh Dickinson University poll suggests that in New Jersey, very few residents believe they live in segregated school districts—even where communities are overwhelmingly white. Among voters in towns at least 90% white, only 9% said their schools were segregated, while just 46% believed their schools were mostly white. The findings point to a major barrier to addressing segregation: convincing people the problem exists. The poll comes as New Jersey awaits an appellate decision in a long-running school segregation lawsuit. Filed by the Latino Action Network and other civil rights groups in 2018, it argues the state’s education system allows segregation despite a constitutional ban. Both the Sherrill and Murphy administrations have said demographics depend partly on where families choose to live.
