Air India B787 engine failure in 2023 led to expanded inspections, DGCA tells CIC

The DGCA told the Central Information Commission that a 2023 in-flight engine shutdown on an Air India Boeing 787-8 led GE Aerospace to expand borescope inspection requirements for affected engines. The case, raised in an RTI request, focused on action taken after the final investigation report for Engine No.1 uncommanded shutdown on flight AI-131 from Mumbai to London Heathrow, which carried 267 people. The DGCA said the final report was forwarded to the Directorate of Airworthiness, and GE issued service bulletin SB 72-0543 on December 21, 2023, expanding borescope requirements, including additional engine serial numbers. The aircraft returned to Mumbai for an overweight single-engine landing with no injuries.
