Amelia Earhart: Investigators say discovery likely to be trees
xCruzo Brief
Investigators visiting Nikumaroro, an island in Kiribati, say a plane-like object spotted there is likely to be trees, not the aircraft of missing pilot Amelia Earhart. Earhart disappeared in July 1937, nearly 90 years ago, about a month after beginning a round-the-world flight with navigator Fred Noonan. The team, led by project director Rick Pettigrew, arrived last week to identify the mystery prompted by satellite images. A group of 17 researchers from the Archaeological Legacy Institute (ALI) and Purdue University traveled 830 miles over five days and spent four days on the island dealing with stormy weather and large crabs. The object appears to be old vegetation.
