BBC Studios launches streaming platform for airline passengers

BBC Studios in London is preparing to launch a dedicated streaming platform for airline passengers, expanding how airlines deliver entertainment content. The service, developed with Panasonic Avionics, will debut on aircraft equipped with Panasonic seatback systems and will offer a curated library including BBC Earth, BBC News, BBC Kids, CBeebies, and BritBox. The new platform aims to simplify content licensing by delivering a worldwide inflight catalog rather than region-specific titles, addressing long-standing delays between ground premieres and onboard availability. The user interface mirrors consumer streaming experiences to reduce the learning curve for passengers, and updates to the content library can be deployed more rapidly than traditional licensing batches. The arrangement relies on a partnership with Panasonic Avionics, with executives noting that the platform will enable airlines to access a broader catalog without separate regional deals. Commenting on the project, Panasonic's senior vice president Andy Masson emphasized the need for a robust, reliable inflight streaming solution as airlines seek greater flexibility in entertainment offerings.
