McGuinty said that a proposed submarine deal with German manufacturer partners could enable NATO allies to share crews across a larger fleet, citing inherent interoperability between the German-Norwegian designs. Earlier, Prime Minister Mark Carney announced that Canada has chosen a German company to build its new submarine fleet, with the first four deliveries expected by 2034, and TKMS entering negotiations for up to 12 submarines. Canada’s new class is intended to replace four Victoria-class submarines bought in 1998, only one of which is fully operational, under a lifecycle contract estimated at more than $100 billion and covering 30 to 50 years of maintenance. Meanwhile, NATO said it will begin negotiations to acquire up to 10 Saab GlobalEye surveillance aircraft, benefiting Bombardier because the GlobalEye is built on Bombardier’s Global 6500 business jet manufactured in Canada. NATO described GlobalEye as enabling surveillance across air, land, and sea from one platform.
