WestJet is preparing to wind down operations ahead of a potential strike or lockout involving its flight attendants, but an end-of-service plan does not guarantee a labor dispute will happen. In a note obtained by CBC News, WestJet vice-president of inflight operations Robert Antoniuk said the union agreement outlining how shutdown would occur “is not an indication of escalation toward labour action,” even though it covers what happens if talks between CUPE WestJet Component and the airline fail. Federal mediators are still involved, Transport Minister Steven MacKinnon said, adding that talks are progressing. Airlines must pre-position aircraft and crews; either side must give 72 hours’ notice, with July 30 as a key date for possible cancellations. About 4,400 union members could legally strike after Aug. 2.
