EasyJet and Ryanair could be made to offer 'free hand luggage' under new rule
EasyJet and Ryanair could face a new EU requirement that makes “free hand luggage” part of the default fare, reshaping how low-cost carriers price baggage on European routes. After nearly a decade of talks, an agreement between the European Council and the European Parliament would let passengers bring complimentary cabin hand luggage on board, in addition to the single small personal bag that fits under the seat ahead. The goal is to improve price transparency and prevent airlines from advertising low headline fares that rise sharply once baggage is added. Aviation expert James Doyle (FRAeS) said passengers would receive one personal item (40cm x 30cm x 15cm) plus a small wheeled cabin bag, expected to align with 7kg and 100cm combined dimensions. However, the rules would apply most clearly to EU flights and EU airlines, with UK carriers such as easyJet only covered on journeys returning from the EU into the UK. Low-cost firms may raise base ticket prices to offset lost baggage fees.
