FAA Orders Fuselage Crack Inspections on Boeing 737 Max Jets
The FAA ordered inspections for 471 U.S.-registered Boeing 737 Max jets, focusing on potential fuselage cracks that could affect the aircraft’s ability to handle normal operating loads if not detected. The directive covers the 737-8, 737-9 and 737-8200 models and applies to 1,429 aircraft worldwide. It takes effect Sept. 10. The FAA said no cracks have been found on the 737 Max fleet specifically; the issue was identified on older-generation 737s in a structural component called the “bear strap” near the forward service door on the right side, where stress from takeoffs and landings can cause cracking near door corners. Operators must inspect on a timetable tied to flight cycles and repair any cracks before returning aircraft to service. Boeing said it alerted 737 Next Generation operators in 2019 and is analyzing the root cause and manufacturing changes; Southwest and United said they plan to comply within FAA timelines.
