Florida plane crash: Private jet left from Austin, 9 people killed
Federal and local authorities are investigating after a private jet that departed from Austin-Bergstrom International Airport and was bound for the Bahamas crashed in Florida. The FAA said a Learjet 60 carrying nine people went down around 12:50 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 1 in a residential area in Palm Springs. The agency reported the flight departed Austin and was headed to North Eleuthera Airport in the Bahamas before it crashed. First responders from the Palm Beach County Sheriff’s Department and county fire rescue arrived promptly. Officials said the crash created a massive crater on the side of the road and scattered debris. Footage showed the jet nosediving into the area and bursting into flames. About 600 people were evacuated, and the Red Cross is assisting. Investigators are looking at reports of icing and severe turbulence; cause remains under investigation. The NTSB plans a media briefing later the same day.
