Greek air force jet crashes at annual aerial show, starts fire

A twin-seat Phantom F4 jet operated by the Greek air force crashed during an aerial show north of Athens on Saturday, sparking a fire that sent large plumes of black smoke into the sky. The crash occurred during a low-altitude maneuver at Tanagra air force base, about 60 kilometers (40 miles) north of Athens, during the annual Athens Flying Week event. There were no injuries reported among spectators, who numbered in the thousands. Air force officials did not provide immediate information on the status of the two airmen, citing that rescue crews were hindered by the fire on the base grounds. Eleven water-dropping aircraft and helicopters helped 85 firefighters contain the blaze.
