Greek F-16 fighter jet crash-lands at busy Zakynthos airport
A Greek Hellenic Air Force F-16 fighter jet crash-landed at Zakynthos airport, forcing the closure of one of Greece’s busiest summer terminals. The aircraft was on a training flight when it landed at about 13:45 local time (10:45 GMT) on Thursday after developing a technical fault, according to the air force. Officials said the pilot was in good health while the cause is under investigation. Greek media reported the jet had received an indication of an onboard fire, which led to flames on the runway and an emergency response by firefighters and airport staff. Reports also said the landing gear was not deployed, causing the jet to slide dozens of metres. The Hellenic Air Force did not confirm some media details. The runway closure delayed remaining departures until 21:00, with operations expected to resume after a specialist team removes the aircraft. The jet was from 335 Squadron of the 116th Combat Wing based at Araxos Air Base.
