On average, jets take a direct hit once or twice a year, and no U.S. commercial jet has been lost to a lightning strike since Pan Am Flight 214 crashed in 1963 after a bolt ignited fuel vapor in a wing tank. A single stroke can reach nearly 200,000 amps and temperatures around 54,000°F (30,000°C). Yet engines typically keep spinning and flight crews notice only maintenance log entries.
