How Airbus Solved The A380's Wing Crack Issue Before It Grounded The Fleet
Airbus identified and addressed wing-rib foot cracking on the A380 years before the aircraft’s later grounding. The problem emerged in 2012, when cracks were found in the wing rib feet, structural parts inside the wing that connect internal ribs to skin panels. Airbus reportedly detected cracks on about 40 A380s—around half of the roughly 80 aircraft then in airline service—based on an investigation later summarized in reporting at the time. Aircraft operated by Air France, Emirates and Singapore Airlines were among those affected. Airbus linked the issue to differences in materials: aluminum alloy rib feet and carbon-composite brackets, with manufacturing stresses potentially allowing cracks to grow over time. EASA required fleet inspections through an airworthiness directive.
