India panel proposes simulator-heavy pilot licence to ease crew shortage, document shows signals an effort to tackle India’s pilot shortfall by changing training rules. A draft report seen by Reuters says a Multi-Crew Pilot Licence (MPL) option would move more instruction to simulators and reduce cadets’ time flying real aircraft. The June 3 draft proposes 100 to 120 hours in training aircraft, including at least 20 hours solo, versus at least 200 hours under existing Indian rules. Much of the remaining practical work would use commercial jet simulators, with the panel arguing it could reduce manpower shortages under strong oversight. The committee is chaired by a senior official at India’s aviation regulator and includes IndiGo, Air India and flight-training organisations. IndiGo, Air India and the Directorate General of Civil Aviation did not respond. The Association of Flight Training Organisations has warned June 9 that less real-aircraft time could weaken hands-on skills.
