Indonesia's Anak Krakatau eruption halts flights, schools, fishing

An eruption from Indonesia’s Mount Anak Krakatau suspended flight operations at five airports on Sunday, disrupting hundreds of flights for passengers in and around Jakarta. Soekarno-Hatta International Airport halted departures and arrivals until 1:30 p.m. local time (0630 GMT) due to volcanic ash, stranding hundreds of travelers. The airport operator, Angkasa Pura, said 301 flights were affected, including 58 international routes, with Singapore Airlines cancelling flights to and from Jakarta for the rest of the day. Ash levels reached about 20,000 feet on the Java side and 50,000 feet on the Sumatra side, while some schools and fishing activity were also halted.
