UMW Aerospace in Serendah, Selangor, supplies a key component for Boeing’s 787 Dreamliner engines: fan cases for the Rolls-Royce Trent 1000 and the Trent 7000. The company, a Tier-1 supplier to Rolls-Royce and the first Malaysian firm to reach that status, manufactures the large titanium structural shell that surrounds the fan assembly. UMW invested about RM750 million (around $186 million) in the facility, which started with roughly 100 workers and was expected to reach about 170. A 25-year manufacturing deal was signed with Rolls-Royce on Aug. 12, 2015. Deliveries began with the first Trent 1000 fan case in November 2017, followed by the Trent 7000 in October 2020. Output targets reportedly reached about 250 annually, with full capacity expected around 2025, though public data doesn’t confirm that level was hit. In April 2023, UMW won a second Rolls-Royce contract worth about RM1 billion (around $248 million) over 15 years to make rear cases, investing up to RM65 million in new chemical milling capabilities to bring more assembly steps in-house.
