Man sentenced for assaulting woman at Canton hotel
A man convicted of assaulting a woman at a Canton hotel has been sentenced to 10 years in prison, following an attack tied to a domestic violence case. Canton police were called to a Quality Inn on April 30, 2025, after the victim reported that Desmond Jamal Camp, her intimate partner, demanded sex after she returned from work. Prosecutors said Camp then tried to strip her clothing and held a large knife to her throat, prompting the woman to run to the front desk and trigger a 911 call. Camp left the hotel and drove toward I-575, but was arrested before reaching the interstate. After a two-day trial, Camp was found guilty on June 11 of family-violence-aggravated assault and false imprisonment. On Tuesday, prosecutors announced a 20-year sentence: the first 10 years to be served in prison, with the remainder on probation, including intervention and anger management programs and restrictions on entering Cherokee County.
