More direct flights needed between Sabah, India to realise tourism potential, says High Commissioner

Direct air links between Sabah and India are viewed as a potential game changer for tourism and broader economic cooperation, according to the Indian government in Malaysia. Acting High Commissioner Hitesh Rajpal said New Delhi sees Sabah's tourism, trade, and technology sectors as promising and offered support to push direct connectivity, including discussions with IndiGo. Civil aviation and visa-free entry for Indian passport holders are expected to strengthen travel demand and position Malaysia as a key destination for Indian visitors, particularly with Visit Malaysia Year initiatives. Sabah's Tourism Board Chair Datuk Joniston Bangkuai said India is an important growth market, and direct flights will be pursued with partners.

Sabah recorded 11,282 Indian arrivals in 2025, and 3,802 arrivals between January and April 2026, signaling a gradual uptick as talks continue. The state currently relies on connecting hubs like Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and Brunei to reach Indian travelers, but direct links could boost outbound Indian tourism and related film-industry collaborations.
