New York airport operations resume after disruptions across US Northeast due to technical problems

Flights resumed at New York City-area airports Tuesday after hours of disruptions caused by technical problems at a Federal Aviation Administration air-traffic control facility in Philadelphia. Repairs restored service after an earlier failure left controllers without radar or communications. On Monday, hundreds of flights were canceled across the U.S. Northeast, including more than 600 into and out of Newark Liberty International Airport, as the outage affected major airports in the New York area. Early Tuesday, Newark had about 40 delays and nearly 60 cancellations, according to Flightaware.com. A primary communications line failed and a backup fiber optic line was accidentally severed during railroad construction work. The FAA urged travelers to check flight status.
