American Airlines adopts Starlink for next-generation aircraft connectivity
American Airlines plans to install Starlink satellite internet across more than 500 narrowbody aircraft beginning in 2027, a move designed to meet rising demand for reliable, high‑speed connectivity. The rollout will cover Airbus A321neo and A321XLR jets and other narrowbody types operating domestic and short‑haul international routes. The upgrade aims to support streaming, gaming, video conferencing, and other real‑time online services onboard. Starlink operates thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit to provide broadband coverage for aviation, maritime, and ground networks, offering lower latency than traditional geostationary systems. The initial phase focuses on American's domestic narrowbody fleet to ensure performance across gate‑to‑gate operations, with Heather Garboden noting the improved Wi‑Fi experience for customers.
