Niger, Algeria condemns 'destabilization attempt' and sends 4 fighter jets

Algeria confirmed it has sent four fighter jets to Niger for a “support mission” following last weekend’s attempted coup. In a statement, the Algerian Ministry of Defense said the deployment included two patrols of Sukhoi Su-30 aircraft, totaling four planes, ordered by President Abdelmadjid Tebboune to strengthen strategic cooperation with Niger—especially military ties—after “deplorable developments” in Niamey. Algiers condemned “an attempt to destabilize” the neighboring country and said the jets were sent at Niger’s request. The aircraft landed on August 30 at Niamey airport. Niger’s authorities described the incident as an attempted coup, and Defense Minister Salifou Modi pointed to an “insurgent movement” that began arresting soldiers at Base 101 and firing at strategic sites.
