Nor'easter unleashes 74 mph gusts, mass flight delays

The nor’easter’s peak brought widespread travel and power disruption across the East Coast, including flooded streets in New Jersey and outages affecting thousands. By early today, a weather station in Surf City, New Jersey, recorded a 74 mph gust late Friday night, while other Jersey Shore locations reported gusts above 60 mph. Waves off the Jersey Shore and southern New England were 16 feet or higher, and coastal flood alerts stretched from eastern Virginia through southern Maine. Rhode Island Energy reported about 9,000 customers without power early today, more than half in Scituate. High winds led to restrictions on certain vehicles across multiple Rhode Island bridges, while Amtrak and ferry schedules were also disrupted. More than 200 flights into and out of Boston, Nantucket, Martha’s Vineyard and New York were canceled on Friday, with additional cancellations already planned for today.
