Norway Completes Bluefin Tuna Live Storage: Surface Gun Replaces Diver Method
xCruzo Brief
Norway’s Institute of Marine Research (IMR) says it has completed the first controlled, humane in-cage slaughter of live-stored Atlantic bluefin tuna in Norwegian waters. The breakthrough was announced Oct. 20 after 2026 trials aboard the fishing vessel Vestbris used a custom surface-operated, pole-mounted firearm that avoids the diving-with-explosives method used in the Mediterranean—an approach Norwegian law prohibits. IMR says the full live-storage workflow now works in sequence, from net-setting and cage transfer to sheltered anchorage and on-demand slaughter, without degrading flesh quality. The effort supports ICCAT’s live-storage pilot mandate approved in 2022, with commercial use requiring additional ICCAT approval.
