Over 900 Flights Disrupted At Heathrow & Gatwick As UK Heatwave Turns To Storms
Over 900 flights were disrupted at London’s Heathrow and Gatwick as severe weather shifted from an earlier UK heatwave into thunderstorms. According to the BBC, almost 1,000 flights were affected across the two busiest airports, with delays and cancellations hitting both inbound and outbound services. London Heathrow (LHR) saw 474 flights disrupted, while London Gatwick (LGW) recorded 439 as of 8:00 AM GMT. NATS warned that aircraft needed to avoid affected areas and be spaced further apart, reducing the number of flights that could operate safely and increasing congestion. Heathrow and Gatwick urged passengers to check flight status with airlines before traveling. Air traffic disruption was focused on England and north-western Europe, while other UK airports were reported as largely unaffected. Airport disruption was expected to clear on Sunday, though thunderstorms remained forecast for mainland Europe.
