A five-year-old aspiring pilot, William Hines of Arvada, Colorado, noticed a detail that adults reportedly missed in a Southwest training manual. After receiving a copy from a commercial pilot named Josh, who spent two hours at his home reviewing aeronautical charts and cockpit basics, Hines quickly found that two terrain monitor diagrams didn’t match. He pointed out that one display looked more zoomed out while the other was zoomed in, and Southwest later clarified there was no actual error—only different zoom levels. A family friend forwarded the story to Southwest leadership, and CEO Bob Jordan invited Hines and his family to Dallas for a VIP tour, including time in a full-motion flight simulator.
