Pilot's haunting final words before cargo plane goes missing
Investigators have released the reported final transmission from the pilot of a cargo Boeing 737 K2 Airways after contact was lost near Pakistan’s coast and the aircraft was found following a 12-hour search. The aircraft, missing with five crew members, reportedly descended rapidly after losing radar and radio contact on Tuesday, about 155 nautical miles west of Karachi. Authorities said K2 Airways reported a navigation system issue at 9:18pm local time, and Karachi air control guidance followed before communications and radar disappeared around 9:21pm. Reuters reported flight-tracking data showing an exceptionally steep descent, with the last point at about 1,100 feet above sea level and a vertical rate of minus 22,400 feet per minute. Local authorities later found wreckage more than 50 miles south of Ormara. The pilot’s described “rolling or floating” has been interpreted by experts as potentially indicating problems with the flying system. The aircraft is a Boeing 737-400 converted to a freighter.
