Production of AI-piloted X-BAT fighter jet coming to Puget Sound in 2027
xCruzo Brief
Shield AI, a Dallas-based defense technology company, says it will expand to Puget Sound within six months to build its AI-piloted X-BAT fighter jet, an uncrewed strike aircraft designed for vertical takeoff and landing. The company plans to hire “thousands of people” and produce the jet—frames, components, testing vehicles, systems and avionics—at a new Des Moines facility under construction, targeted for March 2027. Shield AI aims to demonstrate mission capability by 2028 and begin full production in 2029. The U.S. Navy is driving the program with $200 million in development funding. Shield AI also cites experience landing smaller vertical aircraft from Navy and Coast Guard ships.
