Libya’s Public Prosecution says both pilots of a brand-new Cessna Citation Latitude were intoxicated when the aircraft veered off the runway at Misrata International Airport and caught fire on Monday, 14 September. Prosecutors allege investigators found evidence indicating the pilot and co-pilot were operating the jet while under the influence. The pair were questioned and then ordered into pre-trial detention after being confronted with the material. Authorities also accused them of neglecting aviation and general safety rules, saying their actions threatened themselves, the aircraft, the airport, its users and public safety. Turkey-based operator BKNJET Aviation Co. disputes the alcohol claims, saying it received no verified documentation, and says the crew remained in Libya while questioning continued.
