Qantas and the Australian and International Pilots Association have reached a provisional wage deal, a development that comes after long-haul pilots voted to back industrial action. The company’s long-haul group covers about 1,700 pilots flying the Airbus A380, A330 and Boeing 787 on mostly international routes; short-haul pilots are under a separate arrangement. The vote followed failed negotiations over pay and working conditions and could have included 24-hour stoppages and delayed sign-ons. Both sides say progress in discussions at Australia’s industrial umpire, the Fair Work Commission, helped move talks forward. The deal would deliver pay increases, roster improvements and career progression, subject to formalisation.
