State budget extends pilot program offering fruit and veggie discounts to SNAP recipients
Rhode Island’s state budget extended the Eat Well, Be Well pilot program, continuing fruit and vegetable discounts for SNAP recipients beyond its original end date. Launched in January 2024, the program has delivered about $10 million in benefits to more than 100,000 households, according to the Rhode Island Public Health Institute. More than 140,000 Rhode Islanders will receive another year of access, with the state allocating $4.1 million in the fiscal year 2027 budget effective July 1. The incentive provides SNAP beneficiaries 50 cents for every dollar spent on fresh fruits and vegetables at participating retailers, automatically loading rewards onto an EBT card up to $25 per month. The program had been set to expire June 30. Officials said it helps families manage grocery price pressure, and it is available at every Walmart and Stop & Shop in the state, plus West African Superstore in Upper South Providence.
