Stelco cuts expose domino effect of tariffs through supply chain: Experts

Stelco’s plan to lay off up to 500 workers at its Hamilton and Lake Erie facilities has been framed by experts as another example of how U.S. tariffs are rippling through Canada’s integrated steel-and-manufacturing supply chain. The company cited a trade crisis, weak demand and continued import pressure, describing the cuts as necessary to help it survive. The move follows more tariff-linked job reductions, including plans for over 1,000 layoffs at Algoma Steel in Sault Ste. Marie and the closure of ArcelorMittal’s Hamilton wire-drawing mill. Economist Alan Arcand said steel users are losing U.S. sales and reducing output, which lowers purchases from Canadian producers.
