The Delta Air Lines Cabin That Only Exists Because A Seat Couldn't Get Certified

Delta Air Lines’ newest Airbus A321neo cabin is an unusual byproduct of a seat certification delay. Seven A321neos that were meant to receive Safran VUE lie-flat suites are instead being fitted with 44 conventional domestic First Class recliners—more than double the 20 First Class seats on Delta’s standard A321neo. Delta says the interim move avoids leaving new aircraft idle while keeping the option to install the original flat-bed product once certification and delivery issues are resolved. The seven jets entered revenue service in May 2026, with schedules starting June 7 from Atlanta (ATL) to Los Angeles, San Diego, San Francisco and Seattle.
